UPDATE 24TH DAY

Juan cycled yesterday the greatest distance so far, 41km in one day, despite of the poor visibility cause of whiteout phenomenon. Yesterday mid-day, he met María Leijerstam's support car, who has reached the South Pole in just 10 days of expedition. By tricycle, in a shorter route, 500km, and FULL SUPPORTED , has managed to successfully complete its objective.
Juan sends its most sincere congratulations.

UPDATE 16TH DAY

Update 16th day: + 30KM.

Update 16th day: +30KM. Yesterday, Juan was 10hr on route, many of them cycling. Today Juan has told us than he has been spoken with his Norwegians "mentors" (Ousland, Rotmo and company), and who are excited about the progress. Juan thinks, if he will walk the same distance per day, it's possible to reach the South Pole in 42 or 45 days. He is worried about the food and fuel...

UPDATE 15TH DAY

UPDATE 14TH DAY

...

Yesterday, Juan decided to rest because of weather conditions and heavy fog. That gives rise to the phenomenon called whiteout, the horizon disappears completely and there are no reference points at all, leaving the individual with a distorted orientation. These conditions greatly complicate navigation and progress . At that time, Juan left us these reflections.

UPDATE 13TH DAY

Juan."

Juan has written telling us something more about the little freezer:

"As you know, I have a small freezing in my chest. Do not be alarmed please. It is not the typical freezing we are used to see on the news: Black, which is able to complicated. It's more subtle freezing but it may end up giving true complications. It looks like a "mosquito bite" a not significative  ampoule, but if I left it untreated can become infected (which is really dangerous) and start giving real problems.

For now I have applied aloe vera and I have covered to prevent it from opening.

I'm still fighting. Antarctica is making  difficult the conditions this year. I can already pedal but I often get stuck in areas of soft snow.

A big hug and heartfelt thanks for all your support.
John. "

Diario Marca

Very very happy for all the news published in the media. Now we remember those brands that didn't want to support the Juan's expedition. We imagine them as well.

Spectacular graphics that made Diario Marca to teach their readers the expedition.

Update 9

¡Grande Juan!

This morning Juan has surprised us with his unique tribute to Nelson Mandela from Antarctica. Well done Juan!

Vamos a apoyar a Juan.

Update 3

Good news from Juan!

Yesterday beat Daniel Burton, the American Expeditionary also trying to be the first athlete to reach the South Pole by bike and that he had started 24 hours before. As they say in cycling slang, now Juan is "tète of course".

Update 1

Juan is well after the first stage. Soft snow in these first few miles that requires a huge effort to advance and to drag more than 80 kg of weight carried in his pulka.

The weather delays the expedition

A few days of starting the expedition we are still attentive to the weather in Antarctica and now the outlook is not encouraging.

Because of the inclement weather Juan has had to delay his flight to the base Glacial Union, logistics headquarters of the expedition, from which he will starts his challenge. The images that come to us from the different cameras in scientific stations that are scattered throughout the southern continent show a stormy sky with heavy rainfall and strong gusty winds, which makes very difficult the air travel.

We hope that the weather will get better in the coming days for John to begin his period of acclimatization at the base before starting the expedition. For now he is still filing the details with the Norwegian explorer Bengt Rotmo.

#Interview before the challenge

Hi Everybody!

In the last months some different media have been contact with me to make some interview about my next challenge at the South Pole.

I want to thank in this post all their support and show you the last interview I have made, so you can know the detail of my life here in Norway, my next travel to Greenland and, of course, the expedition at the South Pole.

I invite you to see and share it; you can also follow me in Facebook and Twitter for more information:

#Mental training

Hello everybody
I ´m still in Norway, training for the challenge who is waiting for me at the South Pole. The physical training is very important and I am doing my best, sure than the psychological training.
In this project that I am about to make, there are really hard days in completely loneliness waiting for me in one of the most extreme places in the world. Because of this I want to share with all of you some tips on how to train your mind against a goal to reach.

Concentration is vital to keep the motivation during the challenge. Some effective techniques:
  1. Focus on breathing: leaving it flow, it is useful for relaxation too.
  2. Focus on execution:  keeping in your mind just the goal, taking the other entire stimulus apart.
  3. Develop performance rituals: this technique make you feel sure and focus.
  4. See yourself overcoming the challenge: it is vital during the train for the motivation.
  5. Total thought control: Learning how to eliminate the negative thoughts automatically could be useful to avoid decay during the execution of the challenge.
  6.  Not to discourage against fail: it is a good opportunity to learn what you did wrong.
  7. Thinking in pictures full of energy: very effective against the fatigue.
  8. Raising the breath can help to physical activation.
  9. Controlling the emotion is vital because it affects the breathing, sweating…
  10.  Any time is good to practice these techniques, not just during the competition.

#next stop: Greenland

Hello everybody

I am still in Norway preparing myself to overcome my next challenge. The next phase of my training will take place in Greenland, a land with very similar conditions to the ones I will find at the South Pole.
Over there, I`ll try out the equipment that I will be carrying at the expedition. Most of the material is provided by my sponsors in order for me to reach my goal. The equipment includes navigation technology, communication devices and special clothes for extreme weather conditions.

#Greenland challenge, april 2012

It is vital that I learn how to use all the characteristics of the equipment, as well as acknowledging the real weight that I will tow away with my bicycle, which is around 60 kilos. For all of that I have the invaluable help of Børge Ousland, a very important Norwegian explorer who made expeditions in the 90s to the South Pole. There, he is going to teach me about all the difficulties that are waiting for me in my adventure.

#próxima parada: GROENLANDIA

Hola amigos,
